How to convert digital storage units
Bits × 0.125 ÷ 1 = Bytes. Factors are relative to bytes.
Multiply your input by its scale factor, then divide by the output unit’s factor. All factors below are expressed in bytes per one unit. Some factors have been rounded to the precision shown.
| Unit | Factor in bytes |
|---|---|
| Bits | 0.125 |
| Bytes | 1 |
| Kilobytes | 1000 |
| Megabytes | 1000000 |
| Gigabytes | 1000000000 |
| Terabytes | 1000000000000 |
| Kibibytes | 1024 |
| Mebibytes | 1048576 |
| Gibibytes | 1073741824 |
| Tebibytes | 1099511627776 |
Conventions
Decimal kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes use powers of 1,000. Binary kibibytes, mebibytes and gibibytes use powers of 1,024. A byte contains eight bits.
