Paint Calculator

Estimate how many litres of paint you need from wall area, number of coats and paint coverage per litre.

How to calculate paint quantity

Multiply the wall area by the number of coats, then divide by the coverage printed on the paint container. Forty square metres with two coats at ten square metres per litre needs eight litres.

Formula

area × coats ÷ coverage; excludes waste

Worked example

Wall area (m²)
40
Coats
2
Coverage (m² per litre)
10

Applying the formula to these values gives 8 litres.

What should I check?

Subtract doors and windows from the area if appropriate. Rough or porous surfaces may need more paint. The result excludes waste and does not round to available tin sizes.
